“Freedom House’ new executive director to keep eye on Azerbaijan

Freedom House announced today that David J. Kramer has been chosen to serve as the organization's new executive director.

Kramer has had a distinguished career both in government and in the nongovernmental sector. He served as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor from March 2008 to January 2009. He previously served for three years as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, focusing on Russia, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine, in addition to regional non-proliferation issues. His experience in the nongovernmental sector includes his current position as a Senior Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, as well as a five-year tenure at the Carnegie Endowment, where he was associate director of the Russian and Eurasian Program.

"David Kramer is highly respected within the democracy and human rights field and across the political spectrum. He has demonstrated throughout his career a firm commitment to the causes of global freedom, U.S. engagement in the world, and bipartisan consensus," said William H. Taft, IV, chair of the board of trustees at Freedom House. "We are thrilled that he has agreed to join us and look forward to his leadership as we continue to fulfill and build upon our mission of supporting freedom around the world."

Kramer told Azerbaijani “Turan” news agency that “Freedom House” will keep an eye on human rights and democratic issues in Azerbaijan.
