G. Yeghiazaryan: ‘Yes and No’ reality show ahead of referendum introduced new political culture in Armenia
'Yes and No’ reality show launched as part of the campaign ahead of the constitutional referendum in Armenia is a welcome initiative: thanks to the program, members of the two opposing teams get into the same car and travel to regions to participate in a common event, ex-deputy minister of national security of Armenia Gurgen Yeghiazaryan said at a press conference today.
As regards the essence of the constitutional reform, G. Yeghiazaryan as a participant of the show noted: “The proposed draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia raise concern over the provision about Defense Ministry since it is not clear who will head that sphere”.
Yeghiazaryan added: “In the EU, the gender of a person is determined after they turn 16, while the draft constitutional amendments jeopardize that matter in Armenia as well”.
For his part, MP of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia’s (RPA) faction Sukias Avetisyan said: “We have a particular mentality, and draft constitutional amendments clearly say what a family means in Armenia. The article about the child’s right poses no danger to the national traditions”.
Commenting on Yeghiazaryan’s remarks on Defense Ministry of Armenia, S. Avetisyan said: “The draft constitutional amendments clearly say that in peacetime the day-to-day command and control of troops is done by the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, while in wartime the prime minister becomes the supreme commander-in-chief. The position of defense minister is political, which allows a person having experience in that sphere to assume it”.
‘Yes and No’ joint television project of Armnews and A1+ Companies was launched on November 13. The reality show is broadcast by Armnews TV Channel 12 hours a day and can also be viewed at the website of A1+. 16 political and public figures travel to Armenian regions during the reality show. Two groups were formed, each consisting of 4 participants supporting and 4 opposing the constitutional reform. One team will be visiting northern regions of Armenia, the other will go to southern provinces. Their meetings with local residents will be broadcast live on November 13 – December 2 from 11 am to 11 pm.
