Seyran Ohanyan: Armenia to keep participation volume in NATO peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan
A delegation led by Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan was on a working visit to Berlin yesterday, on November 23, according to the press service of Defense Ministry.
The main purpose of the visit was to attend a meeting of defense ministers of the North Command of NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) Mission Troop Contributing Nations. The participants exchanged opinions about the situation in the area of responsibility of the North Command led by Germany, the existing problems, and the further steps.
In his speech, Defense Minister Ohanyan said that despite the security challenges existing along the perimeter of its own borders, Armenia intends to retain the volumes of its participation in RS until the completion of the mission. He expressed hope that thanks to efficient assistance of the international coalition, there will be new achievements in Afghanistan soon in terms of establishing peace and stability.
In Berlin, S. Ohanyan also had bilateral meetings with Head of the Defense Committee of Bundestag Wolfgang Hellmich and Coordinator for Intersocietal Cooperation with Russia, Central Asia and Eastern Partnership Countries Gernot Erler.
Issues related to security in Europe and the South Caucasus, regional security, and Armenian-German defense cooperation were discussed at the meetings.
S. Ohanyan informed the interlocutors about the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone and the Armenian side’s position on the conflict settlement.
The defense minister of Armenia appreciated Armenian-German defense cooperation and said that the current atmosphere of mutual trust promotes the development of bilateral ties and cooperation in other spheres.
