Opposing draft constitutional amendments means having chance of power change, oppositionist says
The draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia do not include the possibility of establishing a one-party system and reproduction of power, Armenian MP, member of ‘Prosperous Armenia’ opposition faction Vahan Babayan said today during discussion “The Constitutional Reform: Yes and No” held at Media Center of Yerevan.
“People fail to understand that a one-party system and the possibility of power reproduction are out of the question. It is necessary to change the Constitution of Armenia so as to have an opportunity to change power,” the MP noted, adding: “Reforms are needed in the country to achieve a change of power. A power struggle has been waged since 2008, but nothing came out of it. If the Constitution is not amended and the situation remains the same, it will be impossible to achieve a change of power”.
Another participant of the discussion, member of Armenian National Congress (ANC) opposition party Arshak Musakhanyan said : “The constitutional reform process in Armenia is a main obstacle to the implementation of a change of power. Opposing the draft constitutional amendments means getting a chance to change power”.
Supporters of the constitutional reform established ‘Yes’ Front made up mostly of members of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), while opponents of the constitutional reform in Armenia set up ‘No’ Front that currently includes two camps. The first is ‘New Armenia’ Public Salvation Front established by opposition Heritage Party and opposition civic initiative Founding Parliament. The second camp is ‘No’ movement formed by opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) and People’s Party of Armenia, which already created a joint office for campaigning ahead of the December 6 referendum.
