YEREVAN AND NICOSIA READY TO SEE TURKEY EU MEMBER WITH “EUROPEAN IMAGE”
“Armenia has never been against Turkey’s membership to European Union. I think that Turkey will become more envisagable and closer to our ideas if it becomes EU member,” Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said at joint news conference with his Cyprus counterpart.
Though Armenia becomes direct neighbor of European Union if Turkey is voted for, it is not the format but the substance which interests Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan said. “That is to say, not the membership but membership with European standards,” President said.
“Those relations are significant not only in political and economic aspects, but in many other fields, including the respect towards mutual agreements. As, regrettably, the disrespect of agreements results in distrust, it makes gaps deeper and needs more efforts in the future,” President Sargsyan said.
Regarding the President of Cyprus, Mr. Dimitris Christofias also said that Cyprus is not against Turkey’s membership to EU but the only condition is comprehensive correspondence to EU standards.
