“Azerbaijani President’s last statement wasn’t something new, it is a regular bellicose statement, distortion of historical facts,” Vice-Speaker of the Armenian parliament Samvel Nikoyan told a panorama.am correspondent commenting upon Ilham Aliyev’s last statement.

Note that at a meeting with Islamic countries’ diplomats accredited in Azerbaijan, Aliyev, particularly, said that “the NKR problem should be settled on the basis of norms of international law, and since all norms are in favor of Azerbaijan, its territorial integrity will be restored.” He noted that “many monuments are destroyed in the territory of Karabakh, including monuments of Islamic culture.”

“The most important things is that Aliyev met with Islamic countries’ diplomats and tried to play the Islamic, religious card. Presently, he is just looking for support everywhere, and now he expects assistance from Islamic countries only. In all probability, that speculation is connected with Azerbaijan’s resolution to be discussed at UN,” NA Vice-Speaker said.

According to Nikoyan, with that statement Azerbaijan once again expresses disregard for international community’s opinions, approaches, and documents stressing that the problem should be resolved on the basis of norms of international law, yet indeed that country implies a single principle – territorial integrity.

The Vice-Speaker advised the Azerbaijani President to read the provisions of Helsinki Final Act, the Madrid document and the statements issued by OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries’ Presidents.

Asked who was the addressee of Aliyev’s statement that “the international community recognizes NKR as Azerbaijan’s integral part, so the resolution of the conflict is their domestic problem an no one must interfere in it” Nikoyan said:

“I am deeply convinced that the statement was addressed to Russia, since the amendments made to the agreement on Russian military base in Armenia stipulate that Russia provides and strengthens Armenia’s security.”
