President Serzh Sargsyan attends CSTO session

Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan attended Tuesday Collective Security Treaty Organization’s collective security council session in Moscow. reporter tells the session has been attended by the heads of CSTO member states – Dmitry Medvedev (Russia), Nursultan Nazarbaev (Kazakhstan), Islam Karimov (Uzbekistan), Emomali Rahmon (Tajikistan), Alexander Lukashenko (Belarus) and Almazbek Atambaev (Kyrgyzstan). The newly elected President of Kygyzstan paid his first visit to the summit. CSTO Secretary General Nikolay Bordyuzha was also among the senior officials attending the summit.

The agenda of the session was very rich – about three dozens of issues have been highlighted, including improvement of collective security system, increase of organization’s potential, optimization of military and military-economic cooperation, information security, fight against circulation of drugs and terrorism.

The CSTO heads of states have passed a statement dedicated to the 20th jubilee of CSTO treaty ratification and to the 10th jubilee of CSTO foundation.

A treaty on Collective Security Treaty Organization was signed on May 15, 1992 among Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan, Russia and Uzbekistan. Later, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Belarus joined the treaty. In 1999 only six states (excluding Azerbaijan, Georgia and Uzbekistan) have extended their activities in CST. In 2002 CST founded its organization, which was joined by Uzbekistan.
