G. Manoyan: Armenian Genocide compensation issue to be raised

“France’s Constitutional Council may define that the bill criminalizing denial of genocides is in accord with Constitution, is partially in accord with it or is unconstitutional,” Giro Manoyan, head of ARF-D Hay Dat and political affairs office, said on Thursday in a news conference.

If it’s defined that the bill isn’t in accord with the constitution, Mr. Manoyan has said, it will be withdrawn to France’s National Assembly to be drafted. “President Sarkozy has also declared he will introduce a new bill. The Constitutional Council is to define within 30 days, leaving little time for the further steps, and the parliament will take vacation prior to the presidential elections,” said ARF-D representative.

“We shouldn’t get disappointed, but we should raise the issue of compensation of Armenian Genocide. Besides recognition and criminalization processes, the issue of compensation should be raised. If the bill is recognized as in accord with Constitution, it will become indisputable, and will serve as background in other EU countries to pass such a bill,” Giro Manoyan said.

G. Manoyan said representatives of Armenian community in France are supposed to have a meeting today with President Sarkozy to discuss the future of the legislation.
