The authorities in Azerbaijan violated the agreement with the US, another time setting on an anti-West campaign and voicing sharp criticism against US president Barack Obama through Azerbaijani pro-government newspapers, opposition newspaper Azadlig reports noting that Baku reacted extremely toughly to the criticism addressed to the Azerbaijani government in an article published in the American reputable outlet The Washington Post.

According to the article, the official newspaper Azerbaijan and ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party press published articles containing direct and tough accusations against US president Barack Obama.

Particularly, in the article titled “Jailed without trial in US” published in the newspaper Azerbaijan Obama is called a “ dictator.” Moreover, it is highlighted in the article that the American president conducts “bloody politics” against other states.

“The people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Egypt and many other countries should be ‘grateful’ to Obama for the mournful results of the politics conducted under the flag of ‘democracy’ and ‘well-being,’” the newspaper mocks claiming that Barack Obama silences his critics arresting them. The example of the prison in Guantanamo is brought where, as the Azerbaijani newspaper claims, people under charges of “terrorism” are allegedly kept, while Obama, like his predecessors, does not find it necessary to conduct a fair trial.

“Obama detains and jails journalists and activists criticizing the current situation. All this indicates Washington’s harassment of the opponents,” the Azerbaijani newspaper writes.

The newspaper Yeni Azerbaijan came up with similar accusations in its article “Washington Post – prisoner of dirty politics.”

In its turn, the newspaper Azadlig notes that the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State Victoria Nuland’s visit to Baku contributed to some warming of relations with Azerbaijan. 

“However, it turns out that the authorities were looking for a convenient occasion to violate that agreement. The critical article of The Washington Post came as ‘manna from heaven’ for the authorities,” the newspaper concludes.

The above-mentioned article of the newspaper The Washington Post read that the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, is showing signs of a frantic despotism. Journalists, bloggers, lawyers, human rights activists and others who speak out for individual liberty are arbitrarily being swept up in a wave of arrests and detentions. Mr. Aliyev, suffering a decline in the oil revenue that has propped up his regime for years, seems to be striking out at anyone who opposes him.
