Armenia’s population is ageing – UNFPA official
People aged 60 and above make about 13 percent of Armenia’s population, Garik Hayrapetyan, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Armenia Assistant Representative, told reporters on Wednesday. This means that the country has ageing population, said the official.
“If no policy is implemented, in 2050, people aged 65 and above will constitute 23 percent of Armenia’s population and people aged 60 and over will make 26-27 percent. If some measures are taken, people aged 60 and above will make 22 percent of the population in 2050,” Mr Hayrapetyan said.
October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons. The theme of the 2014 commemoration is “Leaving No One Behind: Promoting a Society for All.”
