Swedish Parliament to vote on Armenian Genocide motion
The Swedish Parliament, Riksdag, will vote today on a motion to recognize the 1915 Armenian Genocide, the Radio Sweden International informs.
The motion has the backing by members of five of the seven Swedish parliamentary parties including the Left Party and it calls to recognize officially the massacres carried out by Turkey in early 20th century as Genocide.
According to the source, some parliamentarians have opposed the motion saying it will raise Turkey’s fury. Some others slammed the Swedish Foreign Ministry over remaining silent on the issue. Sweden should tend to discuss the issue both with Turkey and other states, parliamentarians say.
The representatives of both communities have been holding a protest action at Riksdag, the source says.
