Police strike hits Brazilian city hard

Some 2,000 Brazilian army soldiers and a contingent of elite federal police are patrolling the nation's third-largest city as a state police strike entered its fourth day, Associated Press reported.

Officials in the northeastern state of Bahia say about 10,000 of the state's 30,000 police are on strike. They are demanding better pay and bonuses.

Violence hit the state's capital city of Salvador Friday, with 19 murders registered by 11 a.m. and reports of at least 10 large stores and supermarkets looted. Thirteen murders were recorded Thursday and seven on Wednesday.

The officials say calm is returning as soldiers start patrolling the streets of Salvador, a city of 2.7 million.

In addition, 650 members of the National Force federal police will patrol Salvador.
