Shevchenko, Voronin to retire

Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko has announced he will retire from international football after his country's elimination from Euro 2012 with a 1-0 defeat by England, Eurosport reported.

And former Liverpool forward Andrei Voronin followed suit, meaning that two key Ukraine players have already confirmed they are finished at international level.

Shevchenko, the finest player Ukraine has produced since independence from the Soviet Union, told reporters he intends to say his farewell in a friendly game before standing down from national team duty.

"What are my plans now? I simply want to go home and put my arms around my kids and kiss my wife," he said.

Voronin had won 74 caps for Ukraine, scoring eight goals.

"I am leaving the Ukraine team. I took this decision in advance. I have chosen to focus on a club career because I am not young enough to combine both roles," the sport.ua website quoted him as saying after the 1-0 Group D loss.
