Side effects of swine flu vaccination occurred in Malta

Last month, The World Health Organisation (WHO) held a meeting of experts to decide whether the swine flu pandemic has peaked and is subsiding, less than a year after the outbreak was classified as a pandemic.

Suggestions that the global outbreak has reached a transition period could spell bad news, with only a quarter of the population so far opting to have the vaccination against the H1N1 virus, leaving thousands of vaccinations in stock. The swine flu vaccinations are estimated to have cost for Malta government approximately €3 million, with over 200,000 vaccines currently left unused. Even though swine flu has claimed the lives of five people in Malta, many have shunned the opportunity to have the vaccination for fear of side effects.

Countries worldwide have, like Malta, cited a high proportion of their citizens as having decided against having the vaccination. Substantial numbers of doctors in other countries, including Italy, have also taken the same position. The WHO declared swine flu a pandemic in June last year, when it announced that the virus had reached “Phase 6” on its alert scale – the organisation’s highest designation.
