Jewish community to mark New Year

As the sun sets tonight, the Jewish community will usher in its new year with prayer -- and a lot of honey.

Rosh Hashana, the first two days of the Jewish year, literally means "head" of the year. The first day begins at sundown and ends an hour after sundown on Friday evening. Apples dipped in honey are a traditional nosh, symbolizing the hope for a sweet year.
The holiday is a time for introspection; it is on these days that Jews pray to be written into the Book of Life for the year ahead. Yom Kippur, which begins 10 days later on Sept. 17, is known as the day of atonement, when Jews ask to be sealed into the Book of Life.
This Rosh Hashana marks the year 5771 on the Jewish calendar, and it also marks the start of a time to seek forgiveness.
