The Sixth All-Armenian tournament of young chemists held

How can artificial diamonds be created, what material components are responsible for metal shine, how can natural amber be distinguished from the artificial one? Questions like these as well as others were debated by 9 teams during the semifinal round of the Sixth All-Armenian Tournament of Young Chemists held at Ayb School on April 30.

On November 28, 2015, the quarterfinal of the Sixth All-Armenian Tournament of Young Chemists was held at Ayb School. Overall 35 teams from the following cities participated in the quarterfinal: Abovyan, Ararat, Gyumri, Hrazdan, Masis, Stepanavan, Vagharshapat, Vanadzor, and Yerevan.

In the outcome of the quarterfinal, nine teams from Gyumri, Masis, Vagharshapat, Vanadzor, and Yerevan moved on to the semifinal round.

“The All-Armenian Tournament of Young Chemists is unique in its kind in Armenia. It grants high school students the opportunity to work cooperatively and find solutions to problems that are yet unsolved, delve into the global practice, and come up with own solutions,” noted Nina Hobosyan, the coordinator of the contest.

All the nine teams first competed in three semifinals, and only three of them reached the final round.

As a result the Evrika team from Vanadzor took first place. The Adrenalin  from Gyumri came second, the Photon from Gyumri came third.

All the nine teams received certificates of participation and prizes, and the top three were also awarded diplomas. To encourage participants, the jury awarded special certificates to the “Best Reporter,” “Best Opponent,” “Best Reviewer” as well as, within each team, “Best Participant” and “Best Captain” nominees.

This year saw a record number of participants, including 36 teams, that is, 172 students and 51 coaches and leaders, that took part in the tournament.

The exclusive organizer of the All Armenian Tournament of Young Chemists in Armenia is the Ayb Educational Foundation.

The contest is held in Armenia under the auspices of the RA Ministry of Education and Science.

The All-Armenian Tournament of Young Chemists  is an interactive team competition where 9th-12th graders solve various interesting chemistry problems, debate over scientific topics, and make their first scientific discoveries. The jury comprises professors from Yerevan State University (YSU), National Polytechnic University of Armenia (SEUA), and Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU), young scientists, teachers, and other specialists.
