Akhalkalaki City Assembly withdraws the proposal to condemn the Armenian Genocide
The Statement by opposition lawmakers of the Georgian Akhalkalaki City Assembly urging the Georgian Parliament to recognize and condemn the Armenian Genocide was withdrawn from the agenda of the Assembly session, Jnews.ge reported.
According to the source, the proposal by deputies of the opposition party “The Alliance of Patriots of Georgia” was rejected at the Bureau before going to the plenary session of the Assembly.
To remind, the statement subject to adoption called for holding a minute of silence for the victims of peoples who have suffered genocide, asked the Georgian Parliament to follow the path of most developed countries in recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, enabling a MP from a single-mandate constituency in Javakheti (predominantly Armenian-populated region of Georgia) to address the plenary session over the topic with the follow-up adoption of a decision.
The source reports that the Bureau members found it inexpedient to discuss the matter at the time, citing the need for multiplatform debates and prior consultations. The members further admitted there is no Armenian around the world who cannot but accept and condemn the Armenian Genocide.
