Around 1435 children suffering from blood disorders are currently under constant medical care at the Hematology Center after prof. R. Yolyan of Armenia’s Ministry of Health, the chief pediatric hematologist of the ministry told a news conference on Thursday.

Anahit Zakaryan, who is also an associate professor at the Chair of Hematology of YSMU, noted of them, 244 are the children suffering from blood cancers, with 188 children diagnosed with acute leukemia.

“The hematology center occupies a leading position in the entire region with its capacities in line with the international standards,” she added.

As for the incidence rates of the disease compared to the previous years, the doctor noted there is no significant increase in their rates. “But if we take into account the actual number of our population, it has perhaps increased by some percent,” she added.

Lusine Krmoyan, a doctor-hematologist at Yolyan Hematology Center, said the center has already registered major successes, adding there is a 70-80 percent survival rate among children in Armenia and worldwide.

Krmoyan cited the statistics, according to which the childhood cancers prevail at ages 2-5 (mainly boys) both in Armenia and elsewhere in the world.

Speaking about the introduction of the institute of psychologist in oncology, Anahit Zakaryan said today the issue can be considered as settled. “We have psychologists working with for kids and adults. The psychologists are intended to especially work with patients suffering from malignant diseases and their families,” the doctor said.
