Armenian deputy FM: Attempts to politicize BSEC activity unacceptable
Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Karen Nazarian decried some attempts to politicalize the activities of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) at today’s news conference following the 38th meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the BSEC member states hosted by Yerevan, Armenia's capital.
The Armenian official stressed the BSEC is a regional economic cooperation structure, therefore some attempts to politicize the activity of the organization ‘are unacceptable’ through the adoption of political documents exceeding the scope of its powers and contradicting its Charter.
“In recent years the Parliamentary Assembly of the organization stands out in this regard, with politicized statements and declarations being adopted on the sidelines of it,” the deputy FM said, adding the issue has also been raised at today’s meeting.
Mr Nazarian highlighted it is a great honor for Armenia to preside over the BSEC organization. “Our country coordinates the organization’s information and communication technologies field for a two-year term starting from January 1 of this year,” he said. “The development of information technologies is among the priorities of the Armenian government, and we attach importance to the maximum deepening of international cooperation in this field,” he said.
Reminding that this is Armenia’s fifth presidency at the organization, Mr Nazarian said Armenia has closely cooperated with the BSEC member states in the course of its chairmanship. “We attach importance to the BSEC activity and will continue to be actively involved in the organization’s activities, especially focusing on its economic component,” the official said.
The regular meeting of the BSEC Council of Foreign Ministers was held in Yerevan earlier on Wednesday, in participation of representatives of the organization’s all member states. Azerbaijan and Turkey took part in the meeting on the level of a deputy foreign minister and a senior Foreign Ministry official, respectively.
