The Yerevan Municipality has fined Sanitek Armenia, a branch of Sanitek International Group – a multinational waste management company headquartered in Lebanon – for failing to conduct proper garbage disposal in the Armenian capital of Yerevan in August.

The city hall says that the company was notified in advance to eliminate all the shortcomings revealed during a monitoring conducted last month within reasonable timeframes, but Sanitek failed to do so, the Municipality’s press service told Panorama.am.   

The company is now set to pay a fine amounting to 12,967,739 drams as part of the contract signed between Sanitek and the Yerevan Municipality,

The waste management company, in turn, submitted its objections to the issued notifications, claiming the failures are linked with ‘objective reasons’, in this case the damages caused to the garbage trucks due to the absence of necessary conditions at the disposal site, as well as a high number of burnt or damaged waste containers and other issues. 

The Municipality says that regardless of Sanitek’s arguments being objective of subjective, it is taking measures to help the company to get back to normal pace of operations given the importance of ensuring uninterrupted waste disposal services.

The city hall says it is holding talks with Sanitek over additional investments to replace the damaged trucks and containers, warning to impose the strictest sanctions set by the contract if the company fails to fix the situation in the shortest period possible.  

The Yerevan Municipality imposed a fine of 12,000,377 drams on the company in July for the same reason.
