Armenian envoy discusses Karaganda incident with Kazakh foreign, interior ministers
Armenia’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan Gagik Ghalachyan held meetings with the country’s Foreign Minister Beybut Atamkulov and Minister of Internal Affairs Kalmukhanbet Kasimov on January 6 and 9 respectively, to discuss, among other things, the murderous brawl in the city of Karaganda and the events that followed.
The officials unequivocally recorded the household nature of the incident, stressing any efforts to give ethnic sentiments to the issue are condemnable and unacceptable, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
Citing the January 3 statement of the Armenian Embassy in Kazakhstan, the Armenian deputy foreign minister’s statements that followed, the talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries as well as the heads of law enforcement agencies, the sides attached importance to maintaining continuous direct contacts between the Armenian Embassy in Kazakhstan and the Kazakh authorities.
The meeting was held in a warm, collegial atmosphere of mutual understanding, the ministry added.
Eight suspects, including two Armenians, have been detained after a 23-year-old Kazakh man was stabbed to death in the clash between two groups of guests during the New Year celebrations in the city’s Ancient Rome restaurant on 1 January. 21-year-old Narek Gururyan, the main suspect in the case, remains at large.
