Commissioner Hahn calls for end to Turkey’s EU accession talks
Johannes Hahn, EU’s Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, called on Friday for an end to accession negotiations with Turkey.
“The most ideal option would be the agreement with Turkey to quit the membership talks,” Hahn told at a press conference ahead of the 54th meeting of the Turkey-EU Association Council in Brussels.
The meeting of the highest decision-making body between Turkey and the EU took place after an interval of almost four years.
On March 13, the European Parliament has called for the suspension of EU accession talks with Turkey in a nonbinding vote, citing violations of human rights and the rule of law. Lawmakers passed the symbolic nonbinding resolution with 370 votes in favor, 109 against, and 143 abstentions.
