The male population of Armenia in the age group of 16 -18 prevails that of female , while in the reproductive age the number of females is higher, Mher Manukyan, Communications Coordinator at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Armenia office told Panorama.am, adding the birth ratio in Armenia makes up 111 boys per 100 girls, whereas the indicator of 102-106 boys per 100 girts is considered normal.

As Manukyan explained, the reason for the imbalance is mostly due to common male migration, as men leave the country in the reproductive age. According to the statistics, there are 44 thousand more women than men in the 20-40 age group and 55 thousand more in the 15-49 age group.

“The common sex imbalance and problem observed in Armenia is that 44 thousand women in the reproductive age want to merry, form a family and embark on a problem which is problematic in terms of demographics,” Manukyan said.

He next added that the preferable option is about having a relatively proportionate demographic structure, admitting also that women have a longer life expectancy in all societies which is why they outnumber male population in the old age group in the world.
