Armenia’s Security Council ready to develop new national security strategy, chief says
Armenia’s National Security Council is ready to assume the functions of the Interagency Committee for the development of a new national security strategy, Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan told a news conference on Friday.
He stressed huge preparatory work has been carried out to start the process. Grigoryan said the reasons for developing a new strategy are numerous.
“The current [strategy] was developed 12 years ago, after which Armenia and the whole region saw fundamental changes. We find it necessary to expand our security concept and we are convinced that our power stems from our ideas, the country’s leaders and image,” he said.
Asked whether the National Security Council has taken any measures after Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement that there are some ‘conspiratorial forces which want to provoke a war’, he said his agency is taking measures to identify those forces, adding he cannot elaborate on the matter.
Commenting on the Armenia-Artsakh relations, Grigoryan said there have been some problems, but they are left in the past.
The top official stressed the absence of diplomatic relations with Turkey, as well as relations with Georgia and Iran greatly affect Armenia’s security environment.
“For example, the Russian-Georgian war left a more negative impact on Armenia’s economy than the April war. In this sense, it’s important to change the system to minimize that influence,” he said.
