The issue of making corrections to the Coat of Arms of Armenia was raised at the Q/A session at parliament by MP Artur Manukyan on Wednesday. In a question addressed to Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Arayik Harutyunyan, Manukyan asked whether any changes or corrections are expected on the national symbol given the recent debate among the public, Harutyunyan said: “The ministry has received numerous proposals over the matter. At the decision of the Prime Minister a working group has been established which is set to discuss the matter with all relevant specialists, stakeholders and interested people. The modifications will take place in the scope of suggestions that will be agreed within the working group,” said Minister Harutyuyan.
To note, the national coat of arms of Armenia was adopted on April 19, 1992, by resolution of the Armenian Supreme Council. On June 15, 2006, the Armenian Parliament passed the law on the state coat of arms of Armenia. It consists of an eagle and a lion supporting a shield. The coat of arms combines new and old symbols. The eagle and lion are ancient Armenian symbols dating from the first Armenian kingdoms that existed prior to Christ. These symbols are found on the Armenian Highland from times immemorial.
