EU mobilises €663 million to support refugees in Turkey
The European Commission announced on Friday, October 31, €663 million in humanitarian aid for major projects under the EU Facility for Refugees in Turkey, New Europe reported.
Under the programme, €600 million will be provided for the union’s largest ever humanitarian programme that provides cash to the most vulnerable refugee families in Turkey, the Emergency Social Safety Net, while the remaining funds will support healthcare and education projects.
“Thanks to EU’s support, around 1.7 million refugees can meet their basic needs, and more than half a million refugee children go to school,” said Christos Stylianides, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management.
The most vulnerable groups will continue to receive the monthly financial assistance through a special debit card. The funding will also ensure more than half a million refugee children attend school regularly, and will help some 20,000 out of school children catch up on their schooling.
