Students resume protests against education minister in Armenian capital
Students from the Faculty of Armenian Philology at the Yerevan State University resumed protests on Monday demanding the resignation of Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Arayik Harutyunyan.
The student strike has been sparked by the minister’s proposed legislation to cut the Armenian Language, Armenian Literature and Armenian History subjects from the mandatory curriculum of the country’s universities.
One of the protest organizers, Gevorg Gyulumyan unveiled their plans to march to the YSU central building to next join members of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Youth Union of Armenia holding a sit-in in front of the ministry. He claimed students from other faculties are also set to join them.
The student says the education minister would not step down amid mounting pressure. Dismissing any political motives behind the student strike, Gevorg Gyulumyan stressed it is solely aimed at protecting the Armenian language, literature and history, urging all to join efforts to put an end to the “ridiculous performance which some anti-national figures are trying to stage.”
“We won’t allow it,” he stressed.
