Arsen Babayan to be released from custody

The jailed former deputy chief of the Armenian parliament staff, Arsen Babayan will be set free, advisor of Armenia’s attorney general Gor Abrahamyan said on Facebook.

Babayan, who was arrested on 21 October, is accused of involvement in a “usurpation of power” resulting in Hrayr Tovmasyan’s appointment as Constitutional Court chairman in 2018.

Abrahamyan says investigators have completed the main part of the probe and other procedural actions regarding Babayan’s case and he is not likely to obstruct justoce any longer.

In addition, President of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia Avetik Ishkhanyan and MP Sisak Gabrielyan have offered personal guarantees for his release on a bail of 500,000 drams per each of them.

The official said the decision to commute the arrest imposed on Babayan and to apply personal guarantees as a measure of restraint was made on Tuesday, 12 November.

“A copy of the decision was sent to the penitentiary's administration to ensure its execution,” he said.
