Senator David Perdue blocks Armenian Genocide resolution
Georgia Senator David Perdue on Thursday blocked a Senate vote on a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide (S.Res.150), the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) said in a Facebook post.
Senator Robert Menendez asked for consent to pass the resolution that would have provided "official recognition and remembrance" of the Armenian Genocide.
Earlier on 13 November Senator Lindsey Graham blocked the passage of the genocide bill in the Senate, hours after taking part in a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Senator Perdue argued that it is not the right time to take up the legislation.
In response, Menendez announced he will relent and will continue his effort on the Senate Floor to expose those who insist on denying the Armenian Genocide.
ANCA calls for pressure on Senator Perdue to allow his Senate colleagues to vote their conscience on this vital human rights issue.
The resolution passed the House of Representatives in a 405-11 vote.
Under the Senate's rules, any one senator can ask for consent to pass a bill or resolution, but any one senator can block it.
