Colin Firth and wife Livia Giuggioli are separating after 22 years of marriage, according to their reps.

The couple's publicists Luke Windsor and Harriet Vocking confirmed the separation in a joint statement: "They maintain a close friendship and remain united in their love for their children. They kindly ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.”

The news comes almost two years after Giuggioli admitted to an affair with a man she has accused of stalking her, USA Today reports. 

The Italian film producer, 50, and Firth, 59, confirmed the affair took place in a statement provided to USA TODAY by Firth's representative Luke Windsor in March 2018, but claimed journalist Marco Brancaccia continued to harass Giuggioli with a "frightening campaign" of messages after the affair had ended.

“A few years ago Colin and Livia privately made the decision to separate. During that time, Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr. Brancaccia. The Firths have since reunited," the statement, sent by Windsor on the couple's behalf, read. “Subsequently, Mr. Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months, much of which is documented.”

Brancaccia denied the stalking claims, telling The Times that Giuggioli invented them to cover up the affair, which lasted from 2015 to 2016.

Firth and Giuggioli have been married since 1997 and have two teenage sons. The Oscar-winning star of "The King's Speech" also has another adult son from his previous relationship with actress Meg Tilly.
