The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin on Thursday issued a statement expressing concerns over the ongoing developments in the country and urging people to show prudence and refrain from civil clashes.

“In this post-war crisis, when the homeland is facing numerous political, economic and social challenges, accusations and constant calls for political revenge endanger the national unity and security,” the Armenian Church said.

“The Mother See considers the further aggravation of the situation inadmissible and destructive, calling on the people to show prudence, responsibility, not to succumb to provocations and refrain from civil clashes.

“The Mother See urges Armenia’s president, prime minister, parliament speaker, government members, as well as the leaders of all political forces to seek solutions to the extremely difficult situation at the negotiating table for the sake of our homeland and people,” it noted.

The statement came after the Armenian military demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government due to the current situation.

Shortly after, Pashinyan dismissed Chief of the General Staff Onik Gasparyan, saying the statement by the top military officials is “nothing but an attempt of a military coup d’etat” and urged his supporters to gather at Yerevan’s Republic Square.

The opposition Homeland Salvation Movement also urged supporters to rally at Liberty Square in Yerevan to voice support for the army’s top brass.
