Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin deplores Azerbaijani policy of cultural genocide
Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin noted with sorrow that during the Artsakh second war and in the post-war period Azerbaijan has not stopped barbaric actions against the Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage. The Armenian church has thus reacted to the so-called 'restoration works' carried out by Azerbaijan at the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral of the Holy Savior in Shushi.
"Today, in relatively peaceful conditions, Armenian shrines are continued to be targeted with an aim to eliminate the traces of Armenian identity and evidences on the historical land of Artsakh. Number of shrines are being destroyed, churches are desecrated, records about their historical belonging being altered and cross stones and graves are vandalized in territories held under Azerbaijani control," the statement said.
"Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin deplores the policy of cultural genocide carried out by Azerbaijani leadership which is a manifestation of anti-Armenian policy, intolerance and enmity. Despite constant statements and justifications, this policy adopted by Azerbaijani authorities may not contribute to the establishment of lasting peace and stability in the region," the statement added.
It is noted that the Armenian church will continue to raise these issue before the international community, relevant institutions to stop the actions, violating the rights of the Armenian people.
