Lawyers announce three-day protests in Yerevan
Lawyers have announced three-day strikes in Yerevan to protest against police violence.
The protests will be held from July 11 to 13, according to a decision approved at a meeting of the Chamber of Advocates on Thursday.
The strikes are sparked by the beating of lawyer Karen Alaverdyan by police officers in early June.
The lawyer claimed he was assaulted and detained while trying to stop several policemen from kicking and punching his client at the police headquarters of Yerevan’s Kentron district on June 7.
Two other lawyers claimed to have been ill-treated at a Yerevan police station in February while representing their client. None of the officers accused of beating up the lawyers have been sacked.
The Chamber of Advocates says in a statement its members hold Armenia Police Chief Aram Hovhannisyan responsible for the police brutality, among others, and are going to demand his resignation.
Lawyers held rallied in support of Alaverdyan in the Armenian capital in June.
