Azerbaijan must reopen Lachin Corridor, ECHR reaffirms

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has reaffirmed its order for Azerbaijan to allow essential travel through the Lachin Corridor, Artsakh’s (Nagorno-Karabakh) sole land link with Armenia, the Office of Armenia’s Representative on International Legal Matters reported on Monday.

Earlier on 21 December last year, the ECHR ordered Azerbaijan “to take all measures that are within their jurisdiction to ensure safe passage through the Lachin Corridor of seriously ill persons in need of medical treatment in Armenia and others who were stranded on the road without shelter or means of subsistence.”

The Strasbourg-based court issued the interim measure at the request of the Armenian government shortly after Azerbaijan blocked the road on December 12.

“On July 12, the European Court of Human Rights, upon the request of the Armenian Government to order Azerbaijan to remove all impediment to traffic along the Lachin Corridor, reminded the parties that the interim measure indicated to the Government of Azerbaijan on 21 December 2022 is still in force,” the office said in a statement.

“Thus, the European Court of Human Rights has essentially reaffirmed the necessity of implementing its decision on indicating the interim measures under Rule 39 of the Rules of Court in the framework of the current situation, and it must be complied to by Azerbaijan,” it added.
