Armenian opposition MP dismisses fellow's prosecution as 'politically motivated'
Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has dismissed his fellow MP’s prosecution as “politically motivated”.
MP Hayk Mamijanyan of the opposition Pativ Unem faction on Friday was summoned to Armenia’s Investigative Committee for questioning as part of a criminal probe into “public calls for violence” concerning his statements made back in September this year.
"The authorities have launched criminal proceedings and summoned our colleague Hayk Mamijanyan for questioning as part of the investigation (allegedly for inciting violence), but the very authorities allow the use of violence against peaceful protesters,” Abrahamyan, secretary of the Pativ Unem faction, wrote on Facebook on Saturday.
He accused the Armenian leadership of “instigating and justifying" violence, as well as using violence against their opponents.
“After the explanations provided by Hayk Mamijanyan, the launch of such proceedings is totally illegal and politically motivated," the MP stated.
