Students in Yerevan express support for protest march

Students from Yerevan State University gathered outside the Armenian parliament building in Yerevan on Wednesday to express support for the protest movement against the Armenian government’s unilateral territorial concessions to Azerbaijan.

Hundreds of people led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, Primate of the Tavush Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, continued to march to Yerevan from Tavush Province to press for a halt to the border delimitation and demarcation process involving the handover of Tavush border areas to Azerbaijan.

“We are non-partisan students who are concerned about the situation in the country. We feel obliged to bring up the problems facing Armenia. As members of the scientific community, we must stop unilateral concessions by Armenia,” Knarik Sahakyan, a third-year student of the YSU Faculty of International Relations, told reporters at the protest.

She said as many as 212 students from YSU faculties and Yerevan Brusov State University had joined their petition opposing the land surrender to Baku.

“We are going to present this petition to opposition and pro-government MPs and share our concerns with them,” the student noted.

The petition warned that any order for the withdrawal of Armenian troops from border areas without the verification of the border delimitation process outcome in compliance with the Armenia legislation constituted a crime under Article 421 of Armenia’s Criminal Code.

“We’ve gathered here to voice our demands and express support for the march led by Rev. Fr. Bagrat. We urge other universities to join our petition campaign and struggle,” said Greta Sahakyan, a student of the YSU Faculty of Law.
