Amazon to release documentary about Céline Dion

A new documentary about Céline Dion aims to educate about stiff person syndrome, the neurological disorder the singer has been diagnosed with.

Amazon-MGM will release I Am: Céline Dion, a film that spans a year in the life of the globally successful singer as she deals with the condition that affects her spinal cord and brain, the Guardian reports.

“This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me, the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me,” Dion said in a statement. “As the road to resuming my performing career continues, I have realized how much I have missed it, of being able to see my fans. During this absence, I decided I wanted to document this part of my life to help others who share this diagnosis.” She added that she hopes the film will “raise awareness of this little-known condition”.

The official synopsis calls it an “emotional, energetic and poetic love letter to music” and Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, praises it as “a raw, intimate portrayal of a pivotal time”.

Dion told fans in December 2022 that she was dealing with stiff person syndrome in an Instagram video, saying that the spasms involved with the condition “affect every aspect of my daily life”. It’s prevented Dion from performing and in May 2023, she cancelled all future tour dates.

In December 2023, her sister told the Canadian website 7 Jours that she “doesn’t have control over her muscles” but was determined to return to the stage.

Shakira's statue unveiled in her Colombian hometown

Colombian superstar Shakira's Caribbean home city of Barranquilla unveiled a 6.5-meter (21.3-foot) hip-swaying statue in her honor on Tuesday, AFP reported.

The towering bronze and aluminum creation depicts the singer in a bikini top, bare middle and a long, flowing skirt, her hands clasped over her head and one hip jutting out in one of her characteristic dance moves.

"Hips that do not lie, a unique talent, a voice that moves masses," reads the inscription at the base of the sculpture unveiled on the banks of the Magdalena River at a ceremony attended by Shakira's parents William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll.

"Hips don't lie" is the title of one of 46-year-old Shakira's award-winning songs.

On the platform X, the singer thanked sculptor Yino Marquez and his art student collaborators for "this example of the enormous artistic talent of the people of my country."

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, an icon of Latina girl power, has sold some 80 million albums worldwide and won three Grammy awards.

She has recently been in the news for completely different reasons, investigated over unpaid taxes in Spain and paying millions of euros in settlements.

In 2021, Shakira was named in the "Pandora Papers" leaks, which revealed the wealth and tax avoidance strategies of the global elite.

She has since released a new hit song with Argentine DJ Bizarrap that has been viewed more than 666 million times on YouTube and won 2023 song of the year at the Latin Grammy Awards.

Wham!’s Last Christmas finally tops UK chart

Wham!'s inescapable festive hit Last Christmas has been named the UK’s Christmas No 1 for the first time since it was released 39 years ago, The National reported.

The song, written and performed by the late George Michael, has topped charts before, but never on Christmas Day. First released in December 1984, it was famously beaten to the top spot by Band Aid's charity single Do They Know It's Christmas?.

"An award that’s been 39 years in the making. Merry Christmas to Wham! and every fan that’s helped make Last Christmas the UK’s Christmas Number 1 2023," the Official Charts Company posted on social media.

With the feat, the song has now made history as the longest-ever journey to make it to the top spot on Christmas Day.

"Last Christmas has finally ascended to the much-cherished and sought-after Official Christmas number one, which was always the main goal," said instrumentalist Andrew Ridgeley, who co-founded Wham! with Michael.

"George would be beside himself that after all of these years we've finally obtained Christmas number one. Yog [Michael] said that he wrote Last Christmas with the intention of writing a Christmas number one. It's mission accomplished."

Official Charts Company said Last Christmas is now the UK's third biggest song of all time, with a combined lifetime total of 5.34 million chart units. It was streamed 13.3 million times this week, and was helped to the top spot by special vinyl and CD editions.

Singer Sam Ryder, who placed second at the 2022 Eurovision competition, landed the second spot on the Christmas singles chart with his new song You're Christmas To Me. Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You is at number three.

Messi gifts his World Cup winning jersey to Rafael Nadal

Spanish Tennis legend Rafa Nadal's academy shared that Lionel Messi gifted him signed memorabilia to commemorate the one-year anniversary of his win, GOAL reported.

"Para Rafa, con mucho cariño admiracion [For Rafa, with much love and admiration]" read the inscription that Messi gifted Nadal on the kit, with it now being officially displayed at the Tennis star's academy. The facility, located in Manacor, Spain, helps train young tennis stars to bring the 'best' out of their players - much like Leo and the Argentina national team.

One year on from Argentina's triumphant World Cup victory over France and Kylian Mbappe, it's become a day of celebration to recognize the greatness of Messi. However, Nadal himself is an athlete who is deemed to be one of the GOATs of their respective sport. The Spaniard even backed Messi to win the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award ahead of him earlier this year.

Celine Dion 'no longer has control over muscles', sister says

Legendary Canadian singer Celine Dion no longer has 'control over her muscles,' according to her older sister Claudette.

A year after the My Heart Will Go On hitmaker was forced to cancel her world tour last December, her sibling, 74, suggested that it may be awhile before Celine, 55, returns to the stage following her battle with a neurological disorder called stiff person syndrome, Daily Mail reports.

Celine's condition, which is progressive and incurable, causes the body to attack its own nerve cells and severely impacts mobility.

'She's working hard, but she doesn't have control over her muscles. What breaks my heart is that she's always been disciplined,' Claudette told 7 Jours. She's always worked hard. Our mother always told her, 'You're going to do it well, you're going to do it properly.'

She continued: 'It's true that in both our dreams and hers, the goal is to return to the stage. In what capacity? I don't know.'

While research is ongoing into the condition, the rarity of it means progress has been slow.

Claudette added: 'The vocal cords are muscles, and the heart is also a muscle. This is what comes to get me. Because it's 1 out of a million case, the scientists haven't done that much research because it didn't affect that many people.'

People who suffer from stiff person syndrome (SPS) can turn sufferers into 'human statues,' leaving them struggling to walk or talk.

The condition, which is thought to affect just one in a million people, can also lead to spasms that generate enough force to fracture bone.

Usually, patients are diagnosed around ages 30-50, and they are mostly women.
