1 firefighter killed, 8 injured in fast-moving New York City blaze

One firefighter was killed and eight were injured battling a fast-moving blaze in New York City on Sunday, officials said. The firefighter who was killed was identified as Timothy Klein, 31, a six-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, Mayor Eric Adams and acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said in a joint statement.

At least 168 killed in violence in Sudan’s Darfur: Aid group

At least 168 people have been killed in fighting between Arabs and non-Arabs in Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region, a Sudanese aid group said. Adam Regal, spokesman for the General Coordination for Refugees and Displaced in Darfur, said on Sunday that fighting in the Kreinik area of West Darfur province had also wounded 98 others.

Nissan signals the end of the road for Datsun cars

Car maker Nissan is to stop producing vehicles under the Datsun name, which has a more than century-long history. It was one of the brands that helped Japan's carmakers become established globally after the Second World War. Lebanon rescue teams search for migrant boat disaster survivors

Lebanese rescue teams searched the Mediterranean for survivors Monday after an overloaded people-smuggling boat capsized while under pursuit by naval forces, with dozens unaccounted for still missing at sea. At least seven people died as a result of the disaster, which occurred late Saturday and ignited widespread rage just three weeks before May 15 parliamentary elections.

13-year-old Minnesota youth set to graduate from college

A 13-year-old boy from Minnesota will soon earn his bachelor’s degree from college — with a major in physics and a minor in math. Elliott Tanner is maintaining a 3.78 grade point average at the University of Minnesota and is participating in undergraduate research while also tutoring classmates. He wants to be high-energy theoretical physicist and ultimately a professor of physics at the university.

Egypt frees dozens of prisoners ahead of holiday

Egypt on Sunday released more than 40 prisoners, a week before the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan that is typically a time of amnesty, a political party and state-run media said. Other political activists and family members confirmed the release of several high-profile detainees. The Reform and Development Party said those released had been political prisoners being held in pre-trial detention. The English edition of state-run Al-Ahram newspaper reported a total of 41 prisoners were released.

Beijing's biggest district begins COVID mass testing

Beijing kicked off three rounds of COVID-19 testing for all residents of its biggest district Chaoyang on Monday after dozens of cases were reported, prompting people to stock up on food over fears of an eventual strict Shanghai-style lockdown. Authorities in Chaoyang, home to 3.45 million people, late on Sunday ordered residents and those who work there to undergo testing this week as Beijing warned the virus had "stealthily" spread in the city for about a week before being detected.

Nigerian oil blast kills 110

The death toll from an explosion at an illegal refinery in southern Nigeria rose to 110 on Sunday, the emergency services said, as more people died from their injuries. The blast occurred late Friday at the illegal site between the southern oil states of Rivers and Imo, police said.

Scientists find dingoes genetically different from domestic dogs after decoding genome

Dingoes are genetically distinct from domestic dogs and their evolution has been shaped by Australia’s environment, scientists who have fully decoded the dingo genome have said. An international team of researchers have analysed the genetic makeup of a pure desert dingo called Sandy Maliki, finding that dingoes are an intermediary between wolves and domestic dog breeds.

World's tallest timber residential tower to be built

Switzerland is set to become home to the world's tallest timber residential building. The project, named Rocket&Tigerli, will consist of four buildings including one that boasts a 100-meter-tall (328-foot) tower. The development will be built in the Swiss city of Winterthur, which is located near Zurich. The design will offer modern, high-quality housing with a maximum inflow of daylight, according to its designers, the Danish firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (SHL).

Scorsese’s Film Foundation launches free virtual theater

Film Foundation, the nonprofit founded by Martin Scorsese announced Friday that the Film Foundation Restoration Screening Room will launch May 9 with the presentation of “I Know Where I’m Going!,” Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s Scotland-set romance, recently restored by the Film Foundation and the British Film Institute’s National Archive. The screening room will present films in a live-event manner, with movies playing at a specific time and accompanied by introductions and conversations. “I Know Where I’m Going!” will be available for a 24-hour window.
