Uruguay to support OSCE Minsk Group in Karabakh settlement
On December 8, Speaker of Armenian National Assembly Galust Sahakyan received delegation led by Danilo Astori, Vice President of Uruguay, President of the Senate. Welcoming the guests in the parliament, Galust Sahakyan congratulated Danilo Astori on the occasion of his re-election and wished him fruitful working activity, the press service of the Armenian parliament reported.
Galust Sahakyan noted that today relations between Armenia and Uruguay are based on mutual respect, trust and historical friendship. Galust Sahakyan highlighted the Armenian President’s visit to Uruguay, during which agreements were reached, as well as new perspectives were created for the further cooperation of the two countries. Touching upon the inter-parliamentary relations, the head of the parliament expressed hope that Mr Astori’s visit also will promote the deepening of these relations. Remembering with deep affection the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Uruguay, Galust Sahakyan highly assessed the decision of establishing Museum of Genocide in Montevideo. Talking about the Armenian community of Uruguay, he noted that today it is one of the most prosperous and established communities of Diaspora, which is also represented in the state governance system of Uruguay.
Galust Sahakyan also referred to one of our main political problems: the quick and peaceful way of solving the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. He expressed hope that Armenia can expect the support of Uruguay in counteracting the anti-Armenian wide-scale activity being implemented by Azerbaijan. He emphasized the high level of Armenian-Uruguayan cooperation within the international organizations and the balanced approach of Uruguay during the voting of resolutions directly relating to Armenia in the UN.
Thanking for the warm reception, Danilo Astori expressed hope that this visit will be a good occasion for deepening relations. In Danilo Astori’s words, Uruguay has a newly elected government which also seeks to develop and strengthen the relations with Armenia. He noted that the two friendly countries have many commonalities based on their history, traditions and culture. Mr Astori highlighted the presence of the large Armenian community in Uruguay and its pro-Armenian activity. Referring to the approach of Uruguay on the Armenian Genocide, he noted that the memory of the Genocide victims will always be bright in their country as everything should be done not to allow its repetition.
Speaking about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Danilo Astori noted that Uruguay will always support the OSCE Minsk Group to solve the problem in a peaceful way. He attached importance to the role of parliamentary diplomacy, friendship groups in the development and deepening of relations of the two countries. Then the Vice President of Uruguay was awarded the Medal of Honor by the NA Speaker.
At the end of the meeting, Danilo Astori left a note in the Book of Honorable Guests of the National Assembly, wishing the Armenian people to continue the struggle for peace and justice so that the history will not repeat.
