Congressman Engel calls on Turkey to recognize Armenian Genocide
We are here to pay tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, Congressman Ed Royce (R-California), Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, told reporters at Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex.
“We consider it important to voice an assessment about the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide,” Royce said, noting that the Armenian Genocide was the first genocide in the 20th century.
Congressman Eliot Engel noted that he came to Armenia to voice his solidarity.
“We are voicing our solidarity and calling on to recognize the Armenian Genocide. We are calling on Turkey to recognize it immediately,” Engel said.
The Armenian Genocide was recognized by Uruguay, Russia, France, Lithuania, the Italian Chamber of Deputies, majority of U.S. states, parliaments of Greece, Cyprus, Argentina, Belgium and Wales, National Council of Switzerland, Chamber of Commons of Canada, Polish Sejm, Vatican, European Parliament and the World Council of Churches
