There are citizens in Azerbaijan adjoining to religious extremism, Islamophobia, radical religious movements, the chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, Mubariz Gurbanli, said during a meeting with media executives, Azerbaijani information agency Trend reports.

According to the article, he said Azerbaijan is not a place for missionary activities, and there can be no word about spreading Christianity and other religions in Azerbaijan today, neither there are conditions for that. He also told the media that the representatives of the religious movement Jehovah’s Witnesses will not be allowed to expand activities in Azerbaijan. 

Azerbaijani news media outlet Haqqin.az adds that Gurbanli thinks that while Azerbaijan is “open for everyone” in the field of economy, they cannot afford that in moral and spiritual planes. For all this, Gurbanli goes on claiming that ISIS is not a threat for Azerbaijan, the outlet reads.

Moreover, as the outlet states, Gurbanli said that the State Committee is not pleased with the squandering during the funerals in Azerbaijan. According to APA, the chairman of the State Committee also highlighted that they cannot intervene in the matter of VIP-tents which are used during the funeral ceremonies in Azerbaijan. He said a bill was drafted in the State Committee and is being discussed in the government. That bill is establishing sizes for the graves and rules regulating the activities concerning cemeteries, he said.

“According to the bill, the graves are supposed to be made of ordinary stone with a height of 50cm and the headstone – 60cm. The distance between the graves is also defined. The graves should be arranged in lines with the exception of only married couples. It means that some space should be left next to the husband’s grave for his wife, or vice versa,” Gurbanli informed.
