NGO announces charity project to provide heat for temporary lodgings

It is more than a quarter century hundreds of families living in temporary shelters (wagon-lodgings) in the disaster zone and especially in Gyumri, Armenia are deprived of simple housing and hygienic conditions. The majority of people living in such conditions are unemployed. They get very little social benefits, disability or old age pension for their living; however, it isn’t enough even for getting food. The situation gets severe during winter when these people need money for keeping their shelters warm. Many of these families burn plastic bottles, recycled paper, old clothes and footwear, old tires and other sorts of rubbish they can find in urban waste and in suburbs of the city. The dangerous smoke produced by burning this rubbish makes the air around impossible to breath. The recent increase in electricity price causes power supply cuts for the families who are unable to pay their bills. This is common for all seasons of the year; however, the problem becomes severe during the winter, Shirak Center NGO reports.

The practice in last few years proved that providing these people with firewood during winter season is a great help for these poor families to resist the cold during winter. It should be noted that the air temperature inside those temporary lodgings is the same as in the street in winter.

The annual charity project of providing firewood became a life saving initiative for these people. In previous years it was possible to implement the project thanks to the donations of many Armenians from Armenia and Diaspora, and also many companies and foreigners who donated to this charity.

Shirak Centre NGO announces charity donations for this year as well for the same purpose of helping people to survive harsh winter in Gyumri. The charity project is called “Heat for families sheltered in temporary lodgings.” We call all our partners, companies and people to participate in this charity project and make donations to save peoples’ lives this winter too.

Shirak Center NGO will appreciate efforts of all the people who will respond to this request to join the initiative in keeping the temporary lodgings of poor families warm again.
