“Armenia has always implemented a foreign policy of combining various systems, interests of forces involved in the region, rather than on the basis of creating dividing lines. Armenia and Russia are strategic partners, and the Armenian-Russian agreement on mutual assistance and Armenia’s membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization are a foundation of our security. In parallel with that, Armenia through its cooperation with NATO makes an active contribution to international security and stability as part of an individual action plan and international peacekeeping missions,” Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said in his speech at Columbia University.

According to him, Armenia attaches importance to the development of friendly partner relations with the United States.

“Visa facilitation negotiations are being conducted now. We highly appreciate the U.S. assistance to Armenia. 42 U.S. states recognized the Armenian Genocide, several other states recognized the independence of Nagorno Karabakh,” S. Sargsyan said.

The president stated that this year Armenia is going to accede to the agreement on the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), which will open new prospects of the further development of the Armenian economy and new opportunities for foreign investments.

“At the same time Armenia continues comprehensive cooperation with the EU in a bilateral format and within the Eastern Partnership framework. With the support of the EU and West, our country carried out serious reforms in human rights, democracy, the rule of law, and economic liberalization. I am sure these reforms will be of a continuous nature. We understand that the purpose of these reforms is not integration into this or that structure. They are necessary for us, in the first place. Moreover, these days when interstate borders become more and more transparent and intercontinental common economic spaces are set up, there is no sense in opposing various systems. And there is no sense in implementing a foreign policy based on such contradictions. I am sure that upon its entry into EEU, Armenia will become a connecting link for business communities of member countries and Western states,” Serzh Sargsyan said.
