Central Electoral Commission head on peculiarities of referendum on constitutional reform in Armenia
Unlike campaigns conducted ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections, the campaign for constitutional reform referendum provides more ample opportunities, Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission of Armenia (CEC) Tigran Mukuchyan said during a briefing today after a special sitting of the CEC.
“During a national election, there is a period of candidates’ nomination and registration, while in case of a referendum on constitutional reform, the date of the campaign’s start is set immediately after the decree takes force,” Mukuchyan said.
In his words, another peculiarity of the campaign kicked off today is related to airtime on Public Television of Armenia. Thus, ahead of a national election, airtime is provided throughout the campaign period, whereas in case of a referendum, paid and free airtime is given 30 days before the vote.
The campaign for the referendum can be conducted in various ways such as by holding meetings and meeting with voters, T. Mukuchyan noted.
He added that the Central Election Commission will work as the Commission on the Constitutional Reform Referendum which will fulfill specific functions as envisaged by the Law on Referendum.
The campaign for the constitutional reform referendum in Armenia started today, on October 10, and will finish on December 4, at midnight.
