S. Nikoyan: Armenian opposition should assist with adoption of draft constitutional amendments
The opposition of Armenia should assist with adoption of the draft amendments to the Constitution, MP of the faction of ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Samvel Nikoyan told today the deputy chairman of the opposition Heritage Party Armen Martirosyan.
“When the authorities insisted on the semi-presidential system of government, the opposition demanded a shift to a parliamentary system. When the authorities said the majoritarian electoral system should be kept, the opposition unanimously supported a transition to 100% proportional representation,” Nikoyan said noting that it is the demands made by the opposition at that time that have been included in the draft constitutional amendments.
He added: “As we are moving in that direction, the opposition should help us so that we could adopt the draft amendments to the Constitution”.
Martirosyan said citing opinions of lawyers, experts, ad organizations that he considers the draft constitutional amendments a ‘regression’ for the country.
