Vahan Babayan names 3 reasons why electors should vote for draft amendments to Constitution of Armenia
All Armenian voters who want changes should vote for the draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia at the upcoming December 6 referendum, MP of the opposition Prosperous Armenia faction Vahan Babayan said today at discussion “Constitution Reform: Yes and No” at Yerevan’s Media Center.
He put forwards three arguments in favor of the proposed amendments. “The draft needs to be supported so as to get rid of the super-centralized system of government and achieve a balance among the three branches of power, which was not done in the previous Constitutions. As a result of the constitutional reform, a really independent judicial system will be formed. Thirdly, the proposed amendments will increase the opposition’s levers of power. For 25 years the opposition did not play a serious role, not did it take a serious part in state administration. The proposed amendments give the opposition such an opportunity”.
“Let’s say ‘yes’, understanding that the future of our country is in our hands”, Vahan Babayan stressed.
As was reported, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on August 21 sent the draft constitutional amendments to the country’s parliament. The draft was developed by the Special Commission on Constitutional Reforms adjunct to Armenian President. The president set December 6, 2015 as the date for the constitutional referendum. The campaign for the constitutional reform in Armenia began on October 10 and will end at midnight of December 4.
