Nzhdeh and Tsghuni communities of Syunik region provided with street lighting

Expanding the geographical scope of the joint “Alternative Energy” Project, the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and VivaCell-MTS implemented yet another innovative program, this time in Nzhdeh community of Syunik region. A street lighting system with 43 LED lights has been installed in villages of Nzhdeh and Tsghuni. The community had had no outdoor lighting for many years. Now an area of about 1420 meters, almost 80% of the community streets, has been provided with lighting, according to the press service of VivaCell-MTS.

VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian, FPWC Founder Ruben Khachatryan, Head of Nzhdeh community Gegham Ohanyan and community residents attended the launching event.

The village of Nzhdeh borders Nakhichevan and has a population of 185. 1989 through 1992 the village was settled by Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan, who had relocated from Sisian region. Community development projects cannot be implemented with budget of the community alone: long-term investments are needed for the efficient solution of the existing problems.

We implement the “Alterative Energy” project in five regions of Armenia. The beneficiaries of the project are our compatriots living in borderland villages where our support is needed more than anywhere else. The project with a budget of AMD 207 million gives an opportunity to fully solve the problems in a number of communities. Yet we have chosen an alternative, environmentally friendly solution. With this project we want to awaken hope, belief and optimism in our compatriots, and we also contribute to the prosperity of the community by helping to save budgetary means. Thus, we meet the main objectives of the project: environmental protection, social support and community development,” said VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian.

The environmentally friendly and energy efficient LED street lights will reduce energy consumption by 80%. The timeframe for lighting in summer will be 10:00 PM till 01:00 AM, and the winter timeframe is 6:30 PM till midnight. On holidays, the lighting will be provided all night long. LED lights are energy-efficient, durable and last much longer than regular ones.

The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and its General Partner VivaCell-MTS attach great importance to the use of innovative technologies in the environmental protection initiatives that promote nature conservation, energy efficiency, as well as community development.

About the “Alternative Energy” Project
The Alternative Energy project aims to reduce pollution and protect the environment by using alternative energy resources, particularly solar thermal systems and LED street lights. This year the project is being implemented in a number of communities in Aragatsotn, Tavush, Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor, and Syunik regions. As Armenia has a good potential for solar energy, investments in alternative and energy-efficient technologies can significantly benefit to the solution of environmental and social issues. The project is a new format of the long-term cooperation between the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and VivaCell-MTS in the field of environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources.
