The excitement and joy of Russia is temporary, Chairman of Yerevan Press Club says
“I don’t know whether the EU will become a weaker or stronger institution. First of all, that depends on whether there are strong institutions within the EU, ready to implement efficient and resolute policy,” Chairman of the Yerevan Press Club, Boris Navasardyan said during a press conference commenting on Brexit.
According to Mr. Navasardyan, the excitement and joy of Russia is temporary. “If we consider Russia a powerful player, then there are more powerful ones like the US, EU and China. The alleged withdrawal of the EU doesn’t imply that a place is finally free, on the contrary the other powerful players will try to win that place with taking tougher measures, which Russia will certainly dislike. That joy is temporary, and Russia’s first step of forgiving Turkey is an expectation of temporary success”.
Concerning the effect Brexit will have on Armenia, Mr. Navasardyan noted that the EU budget will be reduced for 10 years, which means the financial support it provides will be reduced too.
“If the EU intends to become a stronger institution, it means the number of its partners will be limited, keeping ties with those that are trustworthy. Those countries that will prove to be useful and reliable partners for the EU might win in this situation. Those that are hesitant can be affected, as the EU doesn’t get anything in return for its support. Armenia is among those countries and needs to introduce serious changes in its domestic and foreign policies, as well as reform programs,” he said.
