Ruben Gevorgyants: Provocations growing all-around Armenia

It is an absurd to imagine an Armenian taking another Armenian as hostage for the salvation of the third one,” Chairman of the Union of Armenian Composers Aram Satyan told reporters while commenting on the hostage standoff following the July 17 armed seizure of the police regiment in Yerevan.

He noted that from time to time Armenia experiences such outbursts.

“If we could manage to prevent that on time, take certain actions. The attitude of the officials toward the ordinary people should be changed. However, I do not consider this attack is a way of solution to the issue, we should be tolerant to each other,” noted the composer.

Mkrtich Minasyan, Chairman of the Union of Architects of Armenia, also present at the meeting, noted that repeated expressions of discontent in the state evidence something is wrong, and the authorities should draw conclusions.

“Gunmen, who are inside the police station, should be ensured a just solution, At the same time, I hope much we can overcome the deadlock without bloodshed. We have witnessed similar cases all the time, while questions have remained open. Responsible state agencies do not implement their duties, do not speak to people. This is accumulated and a wave of discontent arises,” Minasyan stressed, adding the standoff should find its peaceful solution, otherwise Armenia may face difficult times.

Astghik Gevorgyan, Chairwoman of the Union of the Journalists noted discontent is all around, yet the proper methods should be chosen to establish dialogue and communication.

“We have no moral right to loose a single drop of blood. Every similar development may set back our state for a decade,” Gevorgyan stressed, adding the Armenians are often proud of their history, although they are not much keen on drawing lessons from it.

Chairman of the Union of Armenian Writers agreed that the situation should be resolved peacefully; otherwise the country may enter dramatic and tragic developments.

Chairmen of the Union of Armenian Artists Karen Adamyan meanwhile called on the sides to calm down the protesters and escape further provocations.

“I refer to the both sides. Police forces took up actions when the protestors stoned them. ”
To remind, earlier the heads of the art unions of Armenia released a joint statement calling upon the people to consolidate in wake of armed incident, ponder over the ways of solving major challenges ahead of Armenia.
