As a country at war, Armenia needs to make development of arms industry number one priority, Karen Vardanyan says

A few years ago, representatives of the IT sector requested the establishment of corresponding ministry to regulate the issues of the sphere. However it was decided that there is no need to establish a new ministry, as the relevant section of the Ministry of Economy and the two Deputy Ministers perform functions that coordinate the overall IT industry.

During Government session on September 22, the Draft on making amendments in the Law on Government Structure was approved. Accordingly, the IT sector will be taken under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and it will be renamed as the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.

Executive Director of the Union of Information Technology Enterprises, Karen Vardanyan told Panorama.am that their proposal to establish an IT Ministry was partially accepted.

“I think that transport has nothing to do with telecommunications and information technology, so it would be better that either the Ministry of Economy or Energy took transport under their supervision,” he added.
According to Karen Vardanyan, the IT sector, telecommunications should be in a single institution so that the problems receive comprehensive solutions. “The modern world is directly related to telecommunications, development of information technology. That is why I think that the ministry should also be responsible for modernization of weapons.”

According to him, as a country at war, Armenia needs to make development of arms industry its number one priority.

Referring to the newly appointed Prime Minister and the new Government, Karen Vardanyan said that he has known the PM since he was Mayor of Yerevan. He added that even though they had cooperated effectively, he couldn’t give any assessment at this point. “Unless the Government’s plan is made public, we cannot say anything. I have a good opinion of him, but now I can express my opinion only after the publication of the Government's plan and the state budget.”
